2019/11/28

Team Taiwan came second with three gold medals and eight merits at the 19th Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Alliance Awards held Nov. 18-23 in Halong Bay, Vietnam.

Led by the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, 24 Taiwan entries competed against 324 opponents from 15 other economies en route to delivering the country’s best ever performance in the contest.

Smart System Institute under the Taipei City-based Institute for Information Industry claimed the top honor in the industrial manufacturing category with its anomaly detection solution, a technique for judging machine status and identifying errors. The system has been adopted by several companies from home and abroad since officially releasing earlier this year.

At the awards ceremony, Director of SSI Feng Ming-whei said Taiwan is investing heavily in smart technologies for Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things, adding that the institute’s anomaly detection solution is one of the fruits of these efforts.

Other winners included National Central University-based Rongseng Laboratories, which came first in the research and development category with its micro-vibration detector Vibrasee, and Taipei-headquartered Sloth Tech Co., Ltd., which won first place in the business service category and finished second in the blockchain application category with its Pointree app used for storing loyalty cards.

First organized by Malaysia-based APICTA in 2001, the annual competition honors creativity, innovation and excellence among entrepreneurs, individuals, organizations and students in the region.

Widely regarded as the Oscars of the ICT industry, the awards recognize outstanding solutions in 17 categories, which include communications, industry applications, startups as well as sustainability and environment technology.
