Taiwan International Festival of Arts set for next February in Taipei

Taiwan International Festival of Arts is scheduled to kick off Feb. 21, 2020 in Taipei City, showcasing the creative energy of participating artists and the country’s vibrant cultural scene.
 
 Organized by National Theater and Concert Hall, the two-month festival features 17 shows spanning dance, drama and music performances with entertainers from 10 countries and territories including France, Ireland, Italy, Japan and the U.K. Sideline events are also being held containing 40-plus exhibitions, lectures and seminars.
 
 NTCH General and Artistic Director Liu Yi-ru said during a news conference Nov. 25 that the twelfth edition will be titled “To Inspire For All,” bringing thought-provoking and fresh perspectives to audiences while inviting them to join the conversation regarding the role of performing arts in modern life, she added.
 
 One highlight is set to be the opening Taiwan musical “Bando” directed by local artist Fan Chung-chi. Starring Yang Lie, winner of best male singer at the Golden Bell Awards in 1986, and vocalist Emerson Tsai, it tells the story of a complicated relationship between father and son.
 
 Another standout is the epic nine-and-half-hour drama “Players, Mao II, The Names” written and directed by French filmmaker Julien Gosselin. Adapted from a trilogy of novels about terrorism and collective worship by American novelist Don DeLillo, the show is performed as one continuous piece featuring real-time image projections and live music.
 
 Launched in 2009, TIFA aims to raise Taiwan’s profile in the international community by highlighting the full breadth of the country’s arts landscape and bringing together the latest pieces from around the world for fans to enjoy.
