Inaugural National Museum Forum kicks off in Tainan

The first session of the inaugural four-part National Museum Forum took place Nov. 16 at National Museum of Taiwan Literature in the southern city of Tainan, spotlighting government efforts to forge deeper links between the country’s public and private institutions.
 
 Organized by the Ministry of Culture, the session was attended by academics and government officials discussing topics such as increasing public participation, fostering diversity and developing local institutions, as well as amendments to the Museum Act.
 
 At the opening of the first session, Minister of Culture Cheng Li-chun said the forum is an ideal opportunity to reflect on how museums can push boundaries while maintaining their primary purposes of collecting, conserving, communicating, researching and exhibiting for the public good.
 
 According to Cheng, the forum is a space for experts and officials to consider if Taiwan’s institutions conform to the four principles—democracy, inclusiveness, participation and transparency—espoused by the International Council of Museums. It can assist in laying the foundations for greater collaboration among the government, museums and public that will ultimately improve visitor experiences, she added.
 
 The remaining three sessions of the forum are scheduled for Nov. 23, Dec. 7 and Dec. 22 at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in the central city of Taichung, National Museum of Prehistory in the southeastern county of Taitung, and National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei City, respectively.
