Tsai receives AMVETS commander, pledges veteran care cooperation

2019/11/01

President Tsai Ing-wen received American Veterans National Commander Jan Brown Oct. 30 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City, pledging to enhance exchanges with the Maryland-based organization and further cooperation on veteran care.

As Taiwan and the U.S. celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and the accomplishments both sides have made in that time, it is important to remember the efforts of organizations like AMVETS in helping maintain peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, Tsai said.

AMVETS has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of veterans who have served in the region, the president said, adding that the government will learn from the organization’s expertise to provide Taiwan’s own servicemen and women with the best possible long-term care.

According to Tsai, AMVETS and Taiwan’s Veterans Affairs Council have a partnership dating back many years, with the VAC regularly attending the group’s convention as a fraternal organization.

Tsai also thanked AMVETS for its long-term backing of Taiwan’s democratic development and international participation. This includes the adoption of a resolution last year calling for cross-strait dialogue, as well as continuous promotion of education and cultural exchanges between Taiwan and the U.S, she said.

Brown and her husband are visiting Taiwan for Veterans’ Day celebrations Oct. 31, according to the PO. They are also scheduled to visit Taipei Veterans General Hospital and other related facilities.
