Taitung readies for Taiwan Open of Surfing
2019/10/31
The ninth annual Taiwan Open of Surfing is set to kick off Nov. 23 in Taitung, bringing together more than 300 surfers from 28 countries and territories on the southeastern county’s coast.
Co-organized by Taitung County Government and Australia-based World Surf League, this year’s event will see winners crowned for two of WSL’s major competitions: the World Junior and World Longboard championships.
According to TCG, the 15-day open is scheduled for Nov. 23 to Dec. 7, with the prize pool for domestic competitions rising from NT$250,000 (US$8,000) to NT$400,000 in a bid to encourage more entries from local competitors. This change plus the addition of the Men’s Qualifying Series 3,000 mean the event will be bigger than ever, TCG said.
“Our collaboration with World Surf League continues to grow from strength to strength,” Taitung County Magistrate Rao Qing-ling said. “The Open is an opportunity for surfers from around the world to visit Taitung and experience the waves on our Pacific coast, which are the best the country has to offer,” she added.
First staged in 2011, the Taiwan Open of Surfing is one of the newest events on the Asian Surfing Championships calendar, joining competitions in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. It is the only international surfing tournament in Taiwan.
