2019/10/30

An annual Taiwan Study Program for Future Leaders from the Indo-Pacific Region wrapped up Oct. 28 in Taipei City, spotlighting government efforts to develop the next generation of regional talent.

Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the seven-day event featured 45 attendees from 17 countries and territories such as Australia, Nauru, Marshall Islands, New Zealand, Palau, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Tuvalu, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Topics discussed spanned a range of areas including climate change, democracy, diplomacy, green technology and human rights.

In addition to attending lectures and discussions, participants visited sites related to Taiwan’s history like the Presidential Office, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and National Palace Museum in Taipei. They also learned about local businesses and entrepreneurial endeavors at Taoyuan Agriculture Expo and Hsinming Youth Hub in the northern Taiwan metropolis, as well as Shyang Yeu Organic Farm in the northeastern county of Yilan.

According to the MOFA, the camp provides young leaders with a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about Taiwan’s politics, economy, society and culture. It also serves as a platform for expanding exchanges and deepening friendships among regional economies, the ministry added.

Launched in 2009, the leadership program aims to raise Taiwan’s international profile by providing attendees with a rounded understanding of the country and its people.
