Taiwan, Marshall Islands ink economic cooperation pact

2019/10/29

A Taiwan-Marshall Islands economic cooperation agreement was inked in the presence of Presidents Tsai Ing-wen and Hilda C. Heine at the Presidential Office Oct. 25 in Taipei City.

Concluded by Foreign Ministers Jaushieh Joseph Wu and John M. Silk, the pact enables the Indo-Pacific partners to step up cooperation across a broad range of areas such as human resources, investment, services industry, technology, tourism and trade.

Following the signing, Tsai said the agreement paves the way for bilateral relations to reach new heights. Taiwan is committed to working with Marshall Islands on the basis of mutual assistance for mutual benefits to advance sustainable development for the benefit of the people, she added.

According to Tsai, the staunch support for Taiwan's international participation by Silk during the recent U.N. General Assembly in New York is sincerely appreciated. The government also congratulates the Marshall Islands on its election to the U.N. Human Rights Council, she said.

In response, Heine said Taiwan and Marshall Islands share an unbreakable bond built on a common Austronesian heritage, as well as a deep-seated respect for freedom, democracy and rule of law. She also expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s long-standing contributions to the development of Marshall Islands.
