Tsai vows to boost Taiwan’s design prowess

President Tsai Ing-wen said Oct. 23 that the Taiwan Design Center will be upgraded to a national design institute in 2020 as part of government efforts to enhance the country’s soft power.
Taiwan’s vibrant design capabilities are a component of national power and strategic force spurring the country’s global competitiveness, Tsai said. Policies promoting the incorporation of design concepts into Taiwan’s world-leading manufacturing activities are injecting the economy and services sector with fresh momentum, she added.
Tsai made the remarks during the daylong National Design Congress organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taipei City.
According to Tsai, the government is working tirelessly in upgrading the capabilities of the country’s design sector. An outstanding example in this regard is the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) established in June by the Ministry of Culture, she said.
Tasked with supporting the production of cultural content, the TAICCA is viewed by the MOC as playing a central role in fostering sectorwide cooperation and the uptake of new technology in related industries.
Such efforts are paying handsome dividends, Tsai said, citing the latest Global Competitiveness Report released by Geneva-based World Economic Forum in which Taiwan was described as a “super innovator” alongside Germany, Switzerland and the U.S.
Tsai said it is expected the TAICCA and MOEA-backed institute will fast track public and private sector collaboration on the road to positioning Designed in Taiwan alongside Made in Taiwan as a globally recognized and respected guarantee of quality.
