2019/10/23
Team Taiwan came second overall with 3 platinum, 19 gold, 14 silver and 3 bronze medals at the 13th International Warsaw Invention Show at Warsaw University of Technology in Poland.
Held Oct. 14-16, this year’s IWIS saw more than 400 entries from 25 countries and territories, including 48 from Taiwan. Despite the fierce competition, only hosts Poland managed to surpass Taiwan’s prize tally.
According to Wu Chih-yao, chairman of the Taipei City-based Chinese Innovation and Invention Society and leader of the country’s delegation, the successful ideas managed to provide practical solutions to real world problems.
One eye-catching platinum medal winner was created by Col. Hsu Tzu-kui, a professor at the ROC Air Force Institute of Technology in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City, and Dai Chang-xian, principal of National Pingtung University of Technology in the southern county. They created an environmentally friendly boat powered by wind, solar and wave energy.
Another highlight was a collaboration by six high school students from Taipei Fuhsing Private School. The team created a mechanical seat that can be raised or lowered to help elderly people and those with disabilities use the toilet or a wheelchair.
Organized by the Association of Polish Inventors and Rationalizers, IWIS is the largest innovation competition in Poland and one of the biggest in Europe.
