Port Santo Tomás in Guatemala Continues to Absorb Cargo from El Salvador
2011-09-08
The Guatemalan government has invested 15.5 million U.S. dollars in the basic infrastructure construction project to modernize Santo Tomás port, purchasing new machinery and equipment and implementing quality and safety certifications. In addition to enhancing the port’s competitiveness in the Central American region, the government is expecting to continue absorbing El Salvadoran exporters that ship their products from the port, so as to reach the goal of them taking 20% of the port’s total throughput. 17% of Santo Tomás port’s cargo throughput comes from El Salvador currently, and only 3% of the cargo throughput comes from Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua. Therefore, to continue absorbing the cargo from El Salvador is the most important goal.
