Taiwan comic artist wins France residency program

2019/10/03

Taiwan comic artist Stellina Chen has been selected as the artist-in-residence at Maison de la BD (House of Comics) in France’s Loire River region through a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture and BD BOUM festival.

Chen’s work, “In Search of Roots,” impressed the judges with its depiction of her grandmother and grandfather’s journey to find their relatives in China.

According to the MOC, Chen will be subsidized for a round trip ticket to France and all her living expenses during her three-month stay at Maison de la BD.

Founded in 2015, Maison de la BD, run by BD BOUM, is one of France’s premier institutions for cultivating the next generation of comic artists. Residents are given space to work on their creations and learn from others in the industry.

The opportunity is part of a series of collaborations between the MOC-organized Golden Comic Awards and BD BOUM. For the first time, the MOC will have a booth of its own at this year’s edition of the French festival, and it has invited the winners of the GCA to attend.

The BD BOUM festival is scheduled for Nov. 22-24. Its lineup includes around 200 comic artists and 70 companies from around the world.
