Taiwan weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun broke two world records on her way to two golds and one silver Sept. 21 at the World Weightlifting Championships in Thailand.
Kuo claimed silver in the snatch with a lift of 106 kg. Despite tying her own world record, she was unable to overcome North Korea’s Choe Hyo-sim, who won by a single kilogram.
A better result came in the clean and jerk, where a lift of 140 kg broke Kuo’s previous world record of 137 kg set at the Asian Weightlifting Championships. This feat saw her triumph over Choe and China’s Chen Guiming, who came in second and third, respectively.
The second gold came from a score of 246 kg in the combined lift, a prize determined by the total weight of the snatch together with the clean and jerk, beating her own world record again by 3 kg. This placed her ahead of Choe, 245 kg, and Chen, 233 kg.
Kuo’s performance means she is currently positioned to qualify for next year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Born in southeastern Taiwan’s Taitung County, Kuo earned silver at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and bronze at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She has won a total of eight golds across the 2013, 2017, 2018 and 2019 editions of the WWC.
