Taiwan wins tourism prize in Magellan Awards

2019/09/17

A video produced by the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications promoting Taiwan as a must see cycling destination won a Silver Magellan Award for the “Asia, Overall Destinations Eco-friendly ‘Green’ Destination” category Sept. 11.

In the 30-second short, adapted from a 3-minute original, a cyclist takes viewers on a journey to some of Taiwan’s most iconic tourist attractions.

These include the vast rice paddies of southeastern Taiwan’s Taitung County, the spectacular Qingshui Cliff in the eastern county of Hualien, home of the lantern festival Pingxi District in New Taipei City and the beaches of Jibei Island in outlying Penghu County.

TB Director-General Chou Yung-hui said that the short video spotlights sustainable tourism and underscores the government’s commitment to increasing visitor numbers while protecting the environment. Cycling is also set to be the bureau’s promotional theme in 2021, he added.

According to TB, Taiwan’s environment is ideal for cyclists thanks to its highly popular urban public bike sharing systems such as YouBike in Taipei City and its 968-kilometer island-circling Cycling Route No. 1, which was launched in 2015 by the MOTC to facilitate riders seeking to traverse the country.

Presented by U.S.-based magazine Travel Weekly, the Magellan Awards honor the best entities and organizations across the travel industry including airports, cruise lines, travel agents and tour operators.
