Team Taiwan clinches 3rd at International Earth Science Olympiad

Team Taiwan won three golds and one silver to claim third at the 13th International Earth Science Olympiad in Daegu, South Korea, according to the Ministry of Education Sept. 2.

 Held Aug. 26 to Sept. 3, IESO involved 163 high schoolers from 43 countries and territories competing in subjects such as geology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography and terrestrial astronomy.
 
 Team Taiwan comprised Huang Ying-chi from National Chia-Yi Girls’ Senior High School, Liao Ting-juan from the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, Tsai Shen-fu from Kaohsiung Senior High School, and Wu Szu-han from Taichung First Senior High School. It was led by Lin Pay-liam and Yeh Meng-wan from Taoyuan City’s National Central University and Taipei City-based National Taiwan Normal University, respectively.
 
 Liao, Tsai and Wu won golds, while Huang came away with silver. In the International Team Field Investigation, which aims to promote cooperation and friendship among competitors, Liao also won gold as part of a randomly selected lineup of students.

 According to the MOE, incentives of NT$200,000 (US$6,452), NT$100,000 and NT$50,000 are on offer for winners of gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively. Taiwan’s medal tally stands at 36 golds, 15 silvers and one bronze since the first IESO in 2007.
 
 Founded by the International Geoscience Education Organization, an affiliate of the Washington-based International Union of Geological Sciences, IESO consists of theoretical and practical examinations. The former is presented as a set of problems and the latter as experimental tasks.
