Taiwan, Sweden ink R&D synergy cooperation pact

A memorandum of understanding on academic R&D synergy cooperation was inked by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) Aug. 27 in Stockholm.
 
 Under the pact, the two sides will work together in advancing interdisciplinary research in information, communication and systems technology, as well as life and materials sciences. In addition, SSF will allocate 30 million krona (US$3.08 million) for one to three projects each involving four to six research groups from Taiwan and Sweden for up to six years.
 
 During the signing ceremony at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, MOST Minister Chen Liang-gee said the agreement will bolster exchanges among doctorate students, post-doctorate researchers and tertiary faculty members from the two countries in related areas.
 
 During Chen’s visit to the Scandinavian country, he also met with Matilda Ernkrans—Swedish minister of higher education and research—to discuss ways of further enhancing bilateral collaboration.
 
 According to Chen, Taiwan and Sweden are jointly participating in 15 projects under the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation initiative. It is hoped both countries will leverage respective R&D prowess to create opportunities in cutting-edge areas like artificial intelligence and space technology, he said.
 
 As part of this commitment, Chen said the government has set up four AI innovation centers in Taiwan’s elite universities to develop core technologies and applications. Scientists and researchers from Sweden are encouraged to take part in related programs and play an integral role in taking tie-ups to new heights, he added.
