Team Taiwan shines at World Skills Competition in Kazan

Team Taiwan won five golds, five silvers, five bronzes and 23 medallions of excellence at the 45th World Skills Competition Aug. 22-27 in Kazan, Russia, according to the Ministry of Labor Aug. 27.
 
 The 51-category performance ranked Taiwan fourth behind China, Russia and South Korea among 63 participating countries and territories.
 
 According to the MOL, the golds were for bakery, car painting, graphic design technology, information technology software solutions for business and mechatronics, while the silvers came in autobody repair, automobile technology, electrical installations, fashion technology and web technologies. The bronzes were for electronics, manufacturing team challenge, patisserie and confectionery, plastic die engineering, and polymechanics and automation.
 
 The government is sparing no effort to promote vocational education and training, the MOL said, citing amendments to the Regulations for Implementing and Rewarding Skills Competition passed in June. Under the revisions, effective this year medalists at major global competitions will receive monetary incentives ranging from NT$1.2 million (US$38,200) to NT$100,000.
 
 Set to return home Aug. 29 and honored at an MOL-organized ceremony Sept. 4, Team Taiwan will also take part in a victory parade as part of Double Tenth National Day celebrations Oct. 10 in Taipei City.
 
 The biennial WSC was first staged in Madrid in 1950 by International Vocational Training Organization, the predecessor of event’s current organizer World Skills International. Taiwan joined the Netherland-based organization in 1970 and hosted the 32nd edition in 1993 in Taipei.
