Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA set for New Taipei City

2019/08/12

Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA tees off Oct. 31 at Miramar Golf Country Club in New Taipei City, with 81 top female talents from home and abroad battling it out for US$2.2 million in prize money.

Co-sponsored by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education, the tournament runs through Nov. 3 and is considered the most prestigious of its kind in Taiwan. It will be broadcast live to more than 150 countries and territories, according to organizer Taipei City-based Swinging Skirts Golf Foundation.

SSGF Chairman Johnson Wang said during a news conference in Taipei City that the event was renamed from last year’s Swinging Skirts LPGA Taiwan Championship to better promote the country abroad.

Given the increasing popularity of the tournament, it is anticipated the final’s day play will attract 50,000 spectators, up from 32,000 in 2018 for an Asian record, Wang added.

The championship first took place as Swinging Skirts Taiwan LPGA Invitational in New Taipei City in 2011. The event returned to the country in 2017 after three successful editions were held 2014-2016 at Lake Merced Golf Club in California.

SSGF was established nine years ago by a group of male and female golfers dedicated to promoting the game in Taiwan. In a nod to the sport’s Scottish roots, they donned kilts and called themselves the swinging skirts.
