The University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific Discovery Camp kicked off Aug. 5 in Taipei City as part of government efforts bolstering cultural and educational exchanges throughout the Asia-Pacific.
Co-organized by the Ministry of Education and UMAP, the 13-day event themed Contemporary Taiwan involves 40 college students from eight countries such as Canada, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. It features lectures and seminars designed to deepen understanding of the country and its role in regional development.
Other activities include visits to Taipei City-based National Palace Museum, Pinglin Tea Museum in New Taipei City and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. in the northern county of Hsinchu.
According to Bi Cheu-an, director-general of the MOE’s Department of International and Cross-strait Education, Taiwan is hosting the annual camp for the first time.
It is a solid opportunity for the youth to interact with counterparts from different cultural backgrounds, Bi said, adding that the ministry is committed to enhancing regional education ties while helping the younger generations fulfil their potential.
Established in 1991, UMAP is a voluntary organization co-organized by government and nongovernmental representatives from the Asia-Pacific higher education sector. It works to strengthen collaboration among its membership of over 570 tertiary institutions from 35 countries and territories.
