The 49th General Assembly and 83rd Council Meeting of the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians’ Union kicked off Aug. 5 in Taipei City, reaffirming the government’s commitment to promoting regional peace and prosperity.
Co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the three-day event is themed Ocean Democracy and a Sustainable Indo-Pacific Region. It involves around 100 lawmakers and officials from 17 countries and territories, including allies Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu, as well as Australia, Germany, Guam, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Thailand.
Participants are expected to address issues spanning economic cooperation, low-carbon and sustainable homeland initiatives, marine ecology and conservation, sea waste management and oceanic cultural innovation.
The MOFA said it is the 10th time for Taiwan to host the annual meeting. This long-standing involvement illustrates the effectiveness of the Legislative Yuan’s parliamentary diplomacy while spotlighting the central role of the country in advancing sustainable development in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.
Taiwan, along with Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand, founded Tokyo-headquartered APPU in 1965. The organization serves as an exchange platform among the legislative bodies of 21 member nations.
