MOFA stages climate change, sustainable development seminar

A seminar on climate change and sustainable development wrapped up July 24 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
 
 Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in conjunction with Taipei-based Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy, the event also aimed to bring participants up to speed on government efforts to expand Taiwan’s international participation.
 
 During the seminar’s two-day run, more than 100 representatives from Taiwan’s academic, public and private sectors attended keynote speeches and panel discussions spanning topics like the impact of climate change on education, medical care and youth development.
 
 Deputy Minister Kelly Wu-chiao Hsieh said during his opening address that building diversified partnerships to promote the SDGs is a central plank in Taiwan’s foreign diplomacy platform.
 
 This approach is further reflected in the various international assistance and humanitarian projects implemented by the MOFA, Hsieh said, adding that these include initiating environmentally friendly antipollution technology transfers, promoting medical care projects and offering scholarship programs for young people from Taiwan’s allies and developing countries.
 
 Hsieh said the seminar would serve as a world-class opportunity for enhancing public awareness and generating policymaking suggestions. It would also spotlight the importance of Taiwan’s participation in the 25th Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change set for Dec. 2-13 in Santiago, Chile, he added.
