Taiwan improved 10 positions to 23rd globally in staging conventions and meetings, according to the 2018 survey by Amsterdam-based International Congress and Convention Association released May 13.
A total of 173 events were held in Taiwan last year, up from 141 in 2017, the ICCA survey showed. The top three spots worldwide went to the U.S., Germany and Spain, in that order.
This result also saw Taiwan jump two spots to fifth in Asia, ahead of India, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Japan was the regional leader with 492 meetings.
According to the Bureau of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the nearly 23 percent growth in events from 2017 to 2018 spotlights the rising international appeal of Taiwan’s meetings and conventions sector.
The government is committed to supporting continued industry development, as evidenced by the construction of large-scale facilities like Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2 and Kaohsiung Exhibition Center in southern Taiwan, the BOFT said.
Related initiatives include promoting joint bids from public and private sector agencies; conducting research in collaboration with ICCA to assist Taiwan counties and cities attract events; establishing a professional training certification program; and participating in overseas industry fairs, the bureau added.
Established in 1963, ICCA comprises over 1,100 member companies and organizations in almost 100 countries and territories around the world.
