Indigenous group flies flag for Taiwan at Moscow a cappella festival

Taiwan’s O-Kai Singers won third in the small group category at the Moscow Spring A Cappella Festival, spotlighting the rich artistic and performing heritage of the country’s indigenous peoples.
 
 The four-member group, based in Taipei City, beat out 31 other groups to finish in the top three and claim prize money of 600,000 rubles (US$9,200). It also won the highly coveted audience award on the strength of a signature penetrating and powerful performance.
 
 The third edition of the prestigious annual international festival involved individuals and groups from 26 countries and territories performing at 51 venues May 1-12 around the capital of the Russian Federation.
 
 Other groups from Taiwan taking part in the event were Siren Vocal Band, Resonance and Voco Novo, according to the Representative Office in Moscow for the Taipei-Moscow Economic and Cultural Coordination Commission May 13.
 
 O-Kai Artistic Director Lai Jia-ching said this was the first time for the group to perform in Russia in its 15-year history. The bronze is a welcome addition to O-Kai’s 36-strong trophy cabinet and adds another line to its list of touring destinations in Europe and the U.S. he added.
