Panama’s Imports Show Strong Growth

Panama’s imports show strong growth in the first quarter of 2011, reaching US$2.0484 billion, a significant growth of 20.1%, compared with the same period last year, and a higher growth of imports over the same period in each of the last five years. Of all the 2011 imports, capital goods grew 30.2%, these are mainly construction, transportation and communication equipment; intermediate goods of industry and agriculture grew 20.9%; and consumer goods, 13.8%. Chairman of the Panama Industry Union, Mr. Juan Francisco Kiener, said that this is incidental to the economic growth, showing that Panama’s economy is moving. Increased enterprise production, and increased consumption will stimulate the economy.
