Tsai lauds strength of Taiwan-US relations

President Tsai Ing-wen said March 30 that Taiwan is fully committed to working with the U.S. and other like-minded partners to advancing peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
Taiwan is on the front line in defending freedom, democracy and rules-based order from attacks by China, Tsai said. The government will continue safeguarding the country’s sovereignty while adopting a considered, deliberate and unyielding approach to maintaining the cross-strait status quo, she added.
Tsai made the remarks during a civic event in Taipei City marking the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and the anniversary of the Taiwan Travel Act.
According to Tsai, during her U.S. stopover in Hawaii last month following the eight-day Oceans of Democracy 2019 Presidential Visit to Palau, Nauru and the Marshall Islands, she spoke with many members of the U.S. executive and legislative branches. All of them were on the same page in stating that Taiwan has full support from the U.S., she said.
This staunch backing is also reflected in the statement by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at a March 27 congressional hearing that Washington is taking all possible steps via diplomatic channels to ensure Taiwan is not isolated by China in the international community.
Another example of strong Taiwan-U.S. ties, Tsai said, is the Indo-Pacific Democratic Governance Consultation launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and American Institute in Taiwan March 19 in Taipei City. The annual forum serves as a platform for both sides to enhance cooperation and pursue joint projects aimed at advancing good governance and human rights across the region.
Taiwan will keep working with the U.S. in deepening friendship, boosting bilateral exchanges and protecting the values cherished by like-minded countries, Tsai said.
