2019 Michelin Taipei Bib Gourmand list spotlights noodles, comfort food
2019/04/01
The new additions to the Bib Gourmand list for the 2019 Michelin Guide Taipei were unveiled March 27, spotlighting 12 eateries serving dishes ranging from classic Taiwanese comfort food to Sichuan delicacies.
Signifying high standard, good value cooking, the Bib Gourmand distinction is awarded to establishments offering three-course meals for less than NT$1,300 (US$42).
According to the guide, this year’s additions underscore the dynamism and diversity of Taipei’s gastronomic scene, with Indian, Pekingese, Sichuan, Taiwanese, Yunnan and Zhejiang cuisines all represented.
Noodle and Taiwanese restaurants dominate the list with three and four entries, respectively. Among the highlighted locations serving the former are egg noodle and crispy fried pork vendor Mai Mien Yen Tsai in the historic Dadaocheng neighborhood and beef noodle purveyor Tien Hsia San Chueh in Da-an District.
The Taiwanese-style venues include Mother’s Kitchen in Shilin District, which dishes up comfort food like lard rice and fried eggs with preserved radish, and A Cheng Goose in Zhongshan District, famed for serving the poultry steamed or smoked.
Also featured on the list are Sichuan eatery Chili House, known for offering pork dumplings in red oil; Indian restaurant Saffron; more than 60-year-old establishment Do It True, which serves dishes that the owner’s great uncle once cooked for the Qing empress; and Yunnan-style Jen Ho Yuan.
The Bib Gourmand selection was announced ahead of the April 10 release of the 2019 Michelin Guide Taipei. In the inaugural edition last year, a total of 20 restaurants received one or more stars.
