MOL, WorldSkills sign pact on promoting vocational training internationally
2019/03/15
A memorandum of understanding on promoting vocational training around the globe was inked by the Workforce Development Agency under the Ministry of Labor and Netherlands-based WorldSkills International March 13 in Taipei City.
Under the pact, the two sides will operate the WSI Capacity Building Center launched the same day in the southern city of Tainan. The facility will work to share Taiwan’s technical expertise and offer talent cultivation programs in developing nations across a wide range of fields spanning automotive technology, carpentry, engineering, graphic design and welding.
According to MOL Minister Hsu Ming-chun, WSI’s decision to hold its board meeting in Taiwan for the first time, as well as the signing of the agreement at that event, spotlights the WDA’s close collaborative links with the international organization.
The capacity building center in Tainan is just the second of its kind after the inaugural facility in South Korea, Hsu said. It also underscores the government’s commitment to fostering talent cultivation globally, particularly in Africa and New Southbound Policy target countries, she added.
A key plank in the government’s national development strategy, the NSP is enhancing Taiwan’s agricultural, business, cultural, education, tourism and trade relations with 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states, six South Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.
According to the MOL, the center represents further recognition of Taiwan’s technical training prowess. The nation has a proven track record of working with international partners in this field, with Taiwan judges for WSI competitive events in automobile manufacturing, carpentry and welding traveling to Brazil and Russia this year to share their expertise, the ministry added.
WSI—formerly known as International Vocational Training Organization—is a network comprising 80 member countries and territories that works to promote global skills development. It also stages the biennial WorldSkills Competition, next scheduled for August this year in Kazan, Russia.
