Taiwan’s China Airlines won the award for best international float at the 130th Rose Parade Jan. 1 in Pasadena, California.
Titled “Rhythms of Taiwan,” the CAL entry was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. It featured depictions of Nezha, a Taoist deity commonly known as Santaizi, or the Third Prince, dancing along to electronic music and traditional drumming by Taiwan troupe STC Performing Arts.
The 10-meter-high float also included arrangements of carnations, chrysanthemums, orchids and roses to spotlight the company’s commitment to advancing environmental protection, green energy and sustainable development solutions, according to the international carrier.
CAL floats have become a major highlight of the parade since the company first participated in 1987, with this year’s prize marking the 28th time the airline has bagged an award at the event.
Established in 1890, the Rose Parade is broadcast live across the U.S. as well as Central and South America. The 2019 edition featured some 20 equestrian units, 40 floats and 20 bands from around the world marching along a nearly nine kilometer route.
Based in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City, CAL is the nation’s largest carrier. It operates 89 aircraft, including 71 passenger jets and 18 cargo craft, to 156 destinations in 29 countries and territories.
