Taiwan wins big at Golden Pin Design Award

Taiwan dominated the 2018 Golden Pin Design Award Nov. 29 in Taipei City, claiming 26 out of 40 top honors in the international event that rewards outstanding innovation.
 
 Organized by the government-supported Taiwan Design Center and the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, this year’s edition attracted over 7,000 entries from 21 countries and territories.
 
 The three Special Annual Awards all went to Taiwan designs. These are glassware fashioned from recycled champagne bottles, admission tickets made from old magazines and rice paper materials documenting an urban farming project in Taipei.
 
 Taiwan also bagged two of the three concept honors with a robotic arm programmed to build structures from prefabricated concrete blocks and an instructional book on printmaking using the patterns and colors of insect bodies. Winners in this category were awarded a cash prize of US$13,000 each to help bring their ideas to fruition.
 
 Judges said they were particularly impressed by the high standard of entries in this year’s competition and praised the large number of designs focused on addressing social issues such as the aging population, education and medical care.
 
 Over 100 concepts and products chosen as finalists or honorable mentions are being exhibited at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park until Jan. 13, 2019, in Taipei.
