Agreements on police cooperation and a strategic partnership framework were concluded by Taiwan and the Marshall Islands Nov. 20 in the Pacific island nation’s capital of Majuro, underscoring the allies’ commitment to building a safer world and promoting prosperity across the region.
Inked by Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade John Silk during a ceremony attended by Marshall Islands President Hilda C. Heine, the pacts pave the way for expanded institutionalized collaboration and exchanges across a broad spectrum of areas.
Wu is leading a 14-member delegation on a three-day visit to the Marshall Islands through Nov. 21 to mark two decades of official ties.
Prior to the signing, Wu and the group were received by Heine and other senior officials at the Office of the President, where she reiterated her country’s rock-solid support for Taiwan’s international participation.
In response, Wu expressed appreciation on behalf of the government and people, stating that the nation will continue implementing mutually beneficial cooperation projects aimed at fostering the sustainable development of both sides.
Later the same day, Wu joined Minister of Health Kalani Kaneko in opening the Wound Care Center at Majuro Hospital and toured the Taiwan Health Center operated by New Taipei City-based Shuang Ho Hospital. He also met with Kenneth Kedi, speaker of the Marshall Islands Legislature, and hosted a luncheon for Heine and members of the Cabinet.
During an official reception in the evening celebrating 20 years of official ties, Wu presented a patrol vessel and 60 tons of rice to the Marshall Islands in recognition of the firm friendship between the countries. A video message from President Tsai Ing-wen was also played at the event in which she pledged to continue working with the Pacific ally in achieving sustainable national development and lasting prosperity.
