Taiwan’s international reputation for empowering women in the workplace was highlighted after two of its projects were approved during the Sept. 3-7 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Women and the Economy Forum in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
Drafted separately by the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Bureau of Energy and Small and Medium Enterprise Administration, the two plans were among three successful recipients of the Sub-Fund on Women and Economy, according to the Department of Gender Equality under the Cabinet.
The BOE project involves seminars and workshops to explore gender equality issues in the energy sector and exchange best practices on how to tackle them. The SMEA’s proposal utilizes trade shows and match-making sessions to help women entrepreneurs access funding.
Taiwan’s delegation, led by Chan Ting-I, commissioner of the National Communications Commission, highlighted the nation’s work in helping women in the agricultural sector adopt digital technology, the DGE said. Earlier this year, APEC approved another of the country’s proposals on women’s empowerment themed Promoting Gender Inclusion in Smart Agriculture.
Titled Seizing Opportunities for Women and Girls to Advance in the Digital Age, the high-level dialogue launched a new plan supporting female-led businesses. Under the initiative, officials from member economies will develop measures to make it easier for women to learn computer skills and use them to start businesses and tap funds and markets.
As part of Taiwan’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women in smart agriculture, the DGE is holding a seminar for APEC member economies to exchange ideas on best practices Oct. 22-24 in Taipei City.
