Rave reviews for Taiwan performances at Edinburgh Fringe

2018/08/09

Four Taiwan performing arts groups have won rave reviews just five days into the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Ministry of Culture said Aug. 7.

The dance and theater companies have received a great response and are confident their performances will be a highlight of the festival, the ministry said.

Critics writing for British media outlets: Broadway Baby, Fest, The Scotsman and The Wee Review, as well as Fringe audiences, have offered glowing praise for the shows.

Chang Dance Theater, Our Theatre, Sun Son Theatre and Tjimur Dance Theatre, which make up the MOC-sponsored Taiwan Season this year, are showcasing a wide variety of artistic elements including handmade animation, indigenous dance, Shakespearean tragedy and Taoist funeral rites.

Accolades for Tjimur Dance Theatre’s “Varhung—Heart to Heart,” came from Broadway Baby which awarded it a 5/5, calling it “a mesmerizing experience of exquisitely melded indigenous and contemporary dance.”

This is the fifth consecutive year Taiwan has participated in the self-styled “single biggest celebration of arts and culture on the planet,” which runs Aug. 3 to 27 in the Scottish city. Taiwan Season shows are being staged at venues Dance Base and Summerhall.

Launched in 1947, The Fringe—held every August—will host over 3,500 performances in more than 300 venues this year.
