Taoyuan City establishes sister relations with Marshall Islands’ Aur Atoll

2018/08/06

The establishment of sister relations between northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City and Aur Atoll in the Marshall Islands underscores the wider growth in mutually beneficial exchanges between the allies, according to Vice President Chen Chien-jen July 31.

Over the past two decades ago, Taiwan and Indo-Pacific partner the Marshall Islands have fostered comprehensive collaboration in areas spanning agriculture, fisheries, green energy and medical care, Chen said. This agreement can further strengthen these efforts and bolster the robust friendship between the nations and their peoples, he added.

Chen make the remarks during the signing ceremony for the sister relations agreement in Taoyuan. Inked by Mayors Cheng Wen-tsan and Clanson Kaibib Peter, the accord is the first of its kind for Aur Atoll and aims to cultivate culture, education and tourism cooperation.

According to the vice president, Taoyuan is a leading industrial hub and home to the nation’s largest international gateway, while Aur boasts an abundance of natural resources and is a popular tourist destination. Sharing their respective experiences and expertise will bring considerable benefits to both sides, he added.

Going forward, Taiwan and the Marshall Islands will continue to expand cooperation in line with the government’s policy of steadfast diplomacy, which seeks to deepen relations with allies and like-minded partners on the basis of mutual assistance for mutual benefits, Chen said.

Peter was part of a delegation accompanying Marshall Islands President Hilda C. Heine on a state visit to Taiwan July 26 to Aug. 1. During her stay, Heine met with President Tsai Ing-wen and other high-ranking officials, and presided over the signing of bilateral agreements on visa-free entry and coast guard collaboration.
