MOFA readies to roll out youth-focused Instagram account

2018/07/12

The soon-to-launch Instagram account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will play a key role in raising awareness of the MOFA and its activities while expanding government-youth exchanges.

Scheduled to go live July 21, the highly anticipated social platform will showcase a smorgasbord of images reflecting the diversity and vitality of Taiwan. It joins others operated by the government such as President Tsai Ing-wen and Taiwan Today.

According to the MOFA, the timing of the launch coincides with the anniversary of the ministry’s Facebook page. “Instagram is a logical social media extension and an effective conduit for young people to share their stories with signature Taiwan flair,” the ministry said.

“We also expect the account to heighten interest in the functions of the MOFA and its front-line role in advancing Taiwan diplomacy around the world.”

Instagram is another arrow in the ministry’s new media quiver. Since taking the helm of the MOFA in February, Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu has kept his nose to the grindstone in ushering in a new era of near-instantaneous global communication.

“Keeping our foreign friends around the world better informed of the latest developments relating to Taiwan’s foreign affairs is a crucial mission going forward,” he said. “The 24-hour news cycle means there is not a moment to spare in getting out the right message in a clear and concise fashion.”

According to Wu, Instagram has a vital role to play in this process and enables the MOFA to better understand what young people are thinking about Taiwan and its place in the international community. “Another goal is inspiring future generations to join me in serving Taiwan and making a difference,” he said.
