MOHW announces 6 medical centers for New Southbound Policy nations
2018/06/05
Six medical centers will be established in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam as part of government efforts to bolster health care and medical cooperation under the New Southbound Policy, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare June 1.
The centers will assist in cultivating medical talents, establishing culturally sensitive health care environments and strengthening medical production tie-ups. They are also expected to provide health consultation services for Taiwan expatriates while carrying out assessments on market opportunities and medical regulations.
According to the MOHW, the India center will be operated by National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Tainan City, southern Taiwan; Indonesia by National Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei City; Malaysia by Chang Bing Show Chwan Memorial Hospital in Changhua County, central Taiwan; the Philippines by Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital in eastern Taiwan; Thailand by Changhua Christian Hospital in central Taiwan; and Vietnam by Taipei Veterans General Hospital and National Yang-Ming University Hospital in Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan.
MOHW Minister Chen Shih-chung said the centers will play a front-line role in helping the government better understand medical conditions in NSP countries. This enables for the more efficient planning and implementation of cooperation projects and identification of mutually beneficial business openings, he added.
Going forward, Chen said, it is hoped the centers will also facilitate the creation of regional network for managing communicable disease.
Echoing Chen’s remarks, Minister without Portfolio Deng Chen-chung said the centers capitalize on Taiwan’s medical expertise and will help coordinate public and private sector resources in fostering medical and people-to-people exchanges between Taiwan and NSP nations.
A key plank in the government’s national development strategy, the NSP seeks to enhance Taiwan’s agricultural, business, cultural, education, tourism and trade ties with 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states, six South Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.
