Tsai pledges to strengthen Taiwan-Haiti ties
2018/05/31
President Tsai Ing-wen said May 29 that she will continue working with Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise to promote mutually beneficial collaboration across the board and deepen the friendship between Taiwan and its Caribbean ally.
Bilateral relations are going from strength to strength, Tsai said. This is evidenced by frequent exchanges between officials from the two countries, as well as increased trade and economic activities, she added.
Cooperative projects are another rewarding area for Taiwan and Haiti, Tsai said, citing a raft of important projects aimed at improving the well-being of the people like electrical grid transmission development and rice farming.
Tsai made the remarks while receiving Moise, first lady Martine Moise, Foreign Minister Antonio Rodrigue and other members of the Haitian delegation at the Office of the President in Taipei City. Earlier the same day, she accompanied Moise—making his first visit to Taiwan since taking office in February 2017—as he inspected a military honor guard and received a 21-gun salute outside the Presidential Office Building.
According to Tsai, the government and people are deeply appreciative for Haiti speaking on Taiwan’s behalf at the recently concluded 71st World Health Assembly in Geneva and during the U.N. General Assembly in New York last year. Such valuable support is essential in helping Taiwan contribute more to the international community, she said.
In response, Moise said Haiti is committed to taking ties with Taiwan to a new high. It is hoped the two nations will continue injecting fresh momentum into the relationship so as to create a diverse and strategic partnership for a win-win result, he added.
Later in the day, Tsai and Moise signed a communique reiterating a joint commitment to bolstering ties and bestowed state honors on each other for respective efforts in promoting the two-way ties.
Among the articles of the joint communique, Taiwan pledges to continue assisting the Latin American nation with major economic and infrastructure development projects, while Haiti reaffirms its support for the country’s participation in organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization, U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and World Health Organization.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Haiti established diplomatic relations in 1956. The nations have a long track record of fruitful collaboration in projects spanning education, energy, environmental protection, infrastructure and public health.
