President Tsai Ing-wen said Jan. 23 that the government is preparing Taiwan’s economy to advance to the next stage through policies aimed at spurring innovation, consolidating achievements and upgrading industrial capabilities.
“Taiwan has had much success in economic development,” Tsai said. “One of the government’s most important tasks is to help our industries enhance their capacity to innovate so they can face challenges and boldly pursue new ideas.”
Tsai made the remarks while meeting experts from Washington-headquartered Brookings Institution at the Office of the President in Taipei City. Led by David Dollar, senior fellow of the John L. Thornton China Center at Brookings, the delegation is in country on an economic fact-finding visit.
According to the president, Taiwan boasts many talented entrepreneurs who cut their teeth running small and medium enterprises. Over the years, these SMEs accumulated extensive experience dealing with all kinds of challenges, and some even grew into multinational corporations, she said.
“Many Taiwan information and communication technology firms are now global leaders with worldwide operations, making ICT Taiwan’s most internationalized industry sector.”
In addition to the ICT sector, Tsai said, Taiwan’s machinery manufacturers possess distinct advantages and are devoting their efforts to developing smart machinery. “If the machinery and ICT sectors can join forces, Taiwan will surely be more globally competitive in the Industry 4.0 era.”
