President Tsai Ing-wen said Jan. 15 that information security is a core component of Taiwan’s national development strategy and the government is committed to providing a firm foundation for the expansion of high-tech emerging industries by fostering robust infrastructure and expertise in this field.
Information security is national security and vital to boosting the country’s economic upgrading, especially in sectors targeted for strategic promotion under the government’s five-plus-two innovative industries initiative, including Internet of Things and smart manufacturing, Tsai said.
Given the ever-increasing demand for digital content and storage, information security is poised to become a major growth sector, the president said, adding that local firms should work to tap emerging business opportunities in this area.
Tsai made the remarks during a visit to the internet security monitoring and response center of Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd. in Taipei City. State-run CHT is Taiwan’s leading telecommunications service provider and operator of the country’s telecoms network.
After receiving a briefing on the center’s operations and efforts by the carrier to safeguard undersea cables, Tsai commended the Taipei-headquartered firm for advancing information security development in Taiwan through fostering technological innovation and talent cultivation.
The president also lauded the company for spearheading efforts by local security firms to expand into international markets. CHT should seek to further cement its position as the leading domestic supplier of related services while working to promote its products abroad so as to create a globally recognized Taiwan-based information security brand, she added.
Going forward, Tsai said she expects CHT to continue its role as the guardian of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, while providing the technical expertise and support necessary to facilitate the nation’s industrial upgrading and transformation.
