VP Chen affirms Taiwan’s commitment to smart robot development

Taiwan’s high-tech prowess makes it the best partner for global industry heavyweights engaging in research and development of robotic surgical devices, Vice President Chen Chien-jen said Nov. 24
 
 Great advantages are enjoyed by Taiwan in the supply of components and parts as well as cross-sector integration, Chen said. As a leader in precision machinery, the country can help clinical professionals around the world develop surgical equipment and promote medical innovation, he added.
 
 The vice president made the remarks during the opening ceremony for the third Asian Congress of Robotic and Endoscope Surgery in Taipei City. Co-organized by Taiwan Robotic Surgery Association, the annual event serves as a platform to interact and exchange ideas among physicians, researchers and clinical professionals.
 
 Chen said the robot sector is a key component of the government’s Industry 4.0 endeavors, adding that a number of local firms are already making significant headway, including Foxconn Technology Group, Hiwin Technologies Corp. and Qisda Corp.
 
 According to the vice president, the Ministry of Science and Technology is working to promote artificial intelligence and cloud computing research in Taiwan. The MOST will soon team up with the private sector to establish an AI laboratory to cultivate research professionals and initiate projects, he said.
 
 Chen also commended efforts by TRSA to bring the event to Taiwan. Other than highlighting the country’s related achievements, he said the congress is expected to facilitate the development of robot-enabled surgeries and related applications to enhance clinical care quality.
