Culture festival in Hong Kong highlights diverse Taiwan arts

A series of concerts, film screenings and theater performances are set to kick off Nov. 10 in Hong Kong as part of the 12th Taiwan Culture Festival, a monthlong event showcasing the nation’s diverse artistic talents.

 Organized by Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre under the Ministry of Culture, the Nov. 10-12 program comprises concerts by indigenous musicians Abao and Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw and viewings of the documentary “Beyond Beauty—Taiwan from Above” by Taiwan director Chi Po-lin, who passed away in June. A series of film screenings, musical performances and talks about the nation’s arts scene will also take place Nov. 10 at the Eslite Causeway Bay Store.

 The following weekend, Taiwan’s Contemporary Legend Theatre will deliver performances of “Waiting for Godot” at the Kwai Tsing Theatre. The 135-minute adaptation incorporates elements of Peking opera into Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett’s celebrated drama.
 
 KHICC Director Hu Ching-Fang said the theme of this year’s festival is Wonderful World, Colorful Taiwan, adding that the programs were designed to spotlight how the country’s artists combine innovative ideas with cultural traditions. The annual event aims to not only display Taiwan’s inclusiveness but also strengthen cultural ties, she added.

 Another major highlight of the festival is the photo exhibition “Stage” by Shen Chao-liang, an academic and former photojournalist. Running through Nov. 24, the photo series spotlights the dazzling colors of Taiwan’s signature neon-lit stage trucks, which can be seen in cabaret shows, religious celebrations and village karaoke.

 Launched in 2006, the Taiwan Culture Festival serves as a platform to deepen mutual understandings and cultural exchanges through a variety of exhibitions, film screenings, performances, seminars and workshops.
