Taiwan cultural heritage exhibition launches in UK

2017/10/23

An exhibition showcasing Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage is underway at the University of Birmingham in the U.K., the Ministry of Culture announced Oct. 19.

Supported by the MOC, “The Cultural Heritage of Taiwan: Diversity and Transformation” lasts until Nov. 22. The display is curated by University of Birmingham professor Mike Robinson and comprises a series of panels featuring photos and text illustrating the nation’s rich cultural history, as well as government efforts to preserve and showcase the island’s tangible and intangible heritage.

Cheryl Lai, director of the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K., said the exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the country’s rich history as well as its varied geography. The many displays also illustrate how Taiwan has grown from an agrarian society into a highly industrialized nation.

Lai said she hopes the presentation will attract more international attention to the nation’s culture, as well as evoke discussions on the country’s cultural heritage preservation practices.

The exhibition is accompanied by three lectures. The first, which took place at the opening of the presentation, was given by Professor Liou Shuenn-renn from National Cheng Kung University in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City and focused on the city government’s urban renewal efforts, particularly in the area surrounding historic Fort Zeelandia, built by Dutch colonizers in the 17th century.

A lecture outlining local cultural heritage preservation techniques is set for Oct. 25, with another taking place Nov. 15 on the influence of Japanese culture in Taiwan.
