11 Taiwan universities rank among top 100 in Asia

A total of 11 Taiwan universities are among the top 100 in Asia, according to the latest QS Asia University Rankings released Oct. 17.
Taipei City-based National Taiwan University leads the way among local tertiary institutions in 25th, followed by National Tsing Hua University in northern Taiwan’s Hsinchu City in 32nd and National Cheng Kung University in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City in 35th.
The biggest improvements among local institutions were recorded by National Sun Yat-sen University in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City and National Chengchi University in Taipei. Both advanced eight spots to 65th and 87th, respectively.
Other Taiwan universities featured in the top 100 are National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, 36th; National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in Taipei, 47th; National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, 56th; National Central University in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City, 70th; Taipei Medical University, 76th; and National Yang-Ming University in Taipei, 79th.
Released by U.K.-headquartered Quacquarelli Symonds Intelligence Unit, the survey evaluated over 600 institutions across the continent. Universities were assessed according to 10 performance indicators under the four main categories of internationalization, global reputation, research impact and productivity, and teaching commitment.
This year’s final rankings comprise 400 institutions from 17 countries and territories, with a total of 35 Taiwan universities included in the full list. Topping the table is Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, which moved up two places from last year.
National University of Singapore fell one place from the previous edition to second, while Hong Kong University of Science and Technology rose a spot to third. Fourth and fifth places are occupied by Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and University of Hong Kong, respectively.
