A Taiwan delegation met with Facebook senior executives Sept. 5 at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, to engage in exchanges on the development of the global digital economy as well as network society safety, according to the National Communications Commission.
The group comprised Minister without Portfolio Audrey Tang, NCC Chairperson Chan Ting-I and NCC Commissioner Chen Yi-ning. They met with top executives including Elliot Schrage, Facebook’s vice president for global communications, marketing and public policy.
In a statement published on her official Facebook page, Tang, known as the country’s digital minister, said the trip demonstrated the Republic of China (Taiwan) government’s dedication to the development of Taiwan’s digital economy. She said the nation is seeking enhanced dialogue with Facebook’s senior management, adding that in November, Taipei City will host the Asia Pacific Online Safety Summit co-organized by Facebook and iWIN, a government-backed organization supported by the NCC.
Chan said that Facebook is actively taking part in network security research and collaboration, and that exchanges with the company’s executives will help strengthen public-private regulation mechanisms. She noted that this is beneficial to the development of Taiwan’s digital economy and society.
According to the NCC, in an effort to tackle issues of online safety and network security, the government has organized talks and forums with Taiwan’s public and private sectors. It is also collaborating with nongovernmental organizations such as the Child Welfare League Foundation and Taipei Women’s Rescue Foundation on a campaign to promote online safety.
