Chan sisters bag tennis doubles gold at Universiade

Taiwan sisters Chan Yung-jan and Chan Hao-ching snatched women’s doubles tennis gold Aug. 28 at the Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade.
 
 The Chans claimed victory by defeating the Wongteanchai sisters of Thailand 6-1, 7-5. The straight-sets victory was made all the more impressive by the fact that Chan Yung-jan, the older of the two siblings, was suffering from heat exhaustion and vertigo during the final.
 
 Chan Hao-ching said that despite her sister’s condition, they both were committed to bringing home the gold. The younger Chan added that she is grateful for the passion exhibited by the audience at the final, and is looking forward to competing in the U.S. Open Aug. 30 in New York.
 
 In women’s singles tennis, Taiwan’s Chang Kai-chun earned a bronze after losing to Varatchaya Wongteanchai. She lost the match 6-2, 7-6.
 
 Taiwan athletes managed to medal in several other sports the same day, including martial artist Chen Yu-wei, who bagged silver in the men’s taijiquan and taijijian wushu competition. In women’s taijiquan and taijijian wushu, Chen Yi-ying earned silver.
 
 The nation’s first-ever group gymnastics medal went to the women’s team when it secured a silver in the group all-round rhythmic gymnastics event. Ukraine took home the gold with a final score of 33.550, ahead of Taiwan’s 32.
 
 As of Aug. 29, Taiwan had slipped to fourth in the medal table with 18 golds, 29 silvers and 27 bronzes. Japan led the way with 33 golds, 23 silvers and 29 bronzes, with South Korea in second place with 27 golds, 19 silvers and 29 bronzes, and Russia in third with 19 golds, 25 silvers and 35 bronzes.
