Interactive exhibit of Taiwan comic book art kicks off in Taipei

2017/08/21

The Creative Comic Collection Interactive Digital Exhibition kicked off Aug. 15 at National Taiwan Museum in Taipei City, showcasing works from a government-backed quarterly comic series through interactive multimedia technology.

Sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and co-organized by the Academia Sinica Center for Digital Cultures, the exhibition runs until Sept. 3 and features works by local artists concerning the nation’s diverse cultures and rich history that were featured in the Creative Comic Collection.

The content of the CCC, a comic book series published between 2009 and 2015, was based on information gathered under an ongoing program by the National Science Council, now the Ministry of Science and Technology, that digitizes documents and artistic creations concerning Taiwan. During its six-year run, the collection published some 100,000 copies in 20 editions.

According to the MOC, the collection was well received and garnered much praise. Given its popularity and with an eye toward further educating the public about the nation’s cultures and history, the comic series is slated to be revived by the end of the year and issued monthly.

At the exhibition, visitors can use AsusTek ZenFone AR smartphones equipped with augmented reality software Google Tango to explore Qing dynasty tea shops illustrated by comic book artist Zhang Ki-ya. Other displays include images from the comic book “Longquan Musketeer vs. The Mask” by artist Hsiao Nai-chung, who goes by the pen name Hambuck.

The exhibition also utilizes holographic imaging technology to virtually revive historic Taipei buildings and their surroundings. According to the MOC, visitors will take part in an immersive experience, witnessing the magnificent history of Taiwan like never before.
