According to the November 2009 statistics from Comisión de Vestuario y Textil-VESTEX, Guatemalan clothing and textile exports slowed drastically. However, based on the latest data from Banco de Guatemala-BANGUAT, exports of the said product categories from January through September 2010, are 1.0769 billion U. S. dollars, an increase of 168.2 million U. S. dollars, or 18%, compared with the same period in 2009. Guatemalan textile and clothing industries earned 1.076 billion U. S. dollars of foreign exchange, an increase of 8% in that industry compared to the same period last year. Mr. Erick Sterkel of Groupo los Volcanes is optimistic that there will be a 15 to 20% increase in 2011, because 70% of the textile and clothing are exported to the United States.
