Military technology exhibition center opens in Taoyuan

2017/03/10

The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology exhibition center opened March 8 in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City, showcasing nearly half a century of military R&D achievements by the state-backed organization.

Comprising 10 themed exhibitions spanning aviation, anti-landing weapons, cyberwarfare, missiles, surveillance and targeting, the facility also features displays of military technology applications in such areas as energy, environmental protection and fifth-generation telecommunications. Other highlights include a combat helicopter simulator and a mock electronic warfare command and control center.

During the launch ceremony, Minister of National Defense Feng Shih-kuan said the Science and Technology Exhibition Center offers the public a special opportunity to better understand the depth and breadth of government efforts to achieve self-reliance in national defense.

The facility’s spotlighted cutting-edge missile systems and other technologies will boost the people’s confidence in the nation’s defensive capabilities, Feng said. It also fulfills an invaluable public education service, especially for the younger generations, he added.

According to Feng, another function of the center is to underscore the importance of national defense and inspire young people to consider careers in an industry that promises to be one of Taiwan’s main economic drivers of the future.

Since taking office in May 2016, the government has set about revitalizing Taiwan’s economy. A key plank in this policy platform is the five innovative industries initiative, which encompasses biotech and pharmaceuticals, green energy, national defense, smart machinery and the Internet of Things.

Echoing Feng’s remarks, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan said he expects the facility to serve as a platform for expanded public-private sector collaboration on the road to transforming the city into a cluster for firms involved in the national defense industry.

Taoyuan is home to more than 500 NCSIST private sector partners, and it is expected that the organization will harness their potential and draw upon its track record in materials research and system integration in fast-tracking Taiwan’s industrial upgrade, Cheng added.
