TTIA soars to 6th for sleeping in global airport survey

2016/10/21

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport soared to sixth from 10th the year before in the 2016 Best Airports for Sleeping survey released Oct. 15 by sleepinginairports.net.

TTIA’s rest zones with comfortable couches and recliners near the gates earned high praise in the annual survey conducted by the Canada-based travel website’s team of researchers and writers.

According to the survey, recently opened resting areas in Terminal 1 and 2 are TTIA’s “crowning glory,” given they operate 24/7 and offer amenities such as breastfeeding rooms, flat surfaces for reading and working, free Wi-Fi and showers.

The gates at the northern Taiwan airport also earned a thumbs-up for their creative designs ranging from environmental conservation and electronic consumer products to tea shops and the wildly popular Japanese character Hello Kitty.

In addition, TTIA maintained fourth place in the website’s 2016 Best Airports for Overall Experience, with activities for waiting passengers like calligraphy lessons and signature Taiwan food tasting receiving the nod of approval.

The strong performance of TTIA in the surveys is the latest in a long line of international accolades for the facility. In 2015, it was assessed as the best of its kind in the 25 million to 40 million passenger service global category by Montreal-headquartered Airports Council International.

Situated about 40 kilometers west of Taipei City, TTIA commenced commercial operations in 1979 and is Taiwan’s busiest airport. Last year, it handled 38.47 million passengers, up 7.5 percent from 2014, and ranked 44th in the world and 17th in Asia for passenger traffic, according to ACI.
