Honduras and the Central American countries have finally wrapped up the quota negotiation process for EU-bound cane sugar exports. Carlos Melara, president of Asociacion de Productos de Azucar de Honduras (the Cane Sugar Manufacturers’ Association of Honduras) is upbeat about the quota negotiations, saying he expects EU-bound exports to bolster sales for the country’s cane sugar manufacturers. Currently Honduran cane sugar industry has directly or indirectly created 200,000 jobs, accounting for 10% of the country’s total employments. For 2009, Honduras registered approximately US$ 30 million in cane sugar exports and (cane sugar) industry output of 9 million quintals, out of which 65-68% was sold domestically and the remaining exported.
