Vloggers share special Taiwan travel experiences on TLC

2016/04/25

A fresh approach to promoting Taiwan as a leading travel destination saw the real-time experiences of 12 celebrity bloggers from abroad documented via social media platforms and featured in the latest season of “Fun Taiwan Adventures” premiering April 24 on TLC.

Supported by the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the 10-episode series involves participants from Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and the U.S. visiting some of Taiwan’s most popular tourist attractions for special travel experiences. It is the first time this format has been used to promote Taiwan.

“Backpacking across Taiwan is trending, with the Internet the No. 1 source of information for travel planning,” Bureau Deputy Director-general Wayne Liu said. “We are taking advantage of the power of social media to take Taiwan to a bigger global audience.”

The latest initiative is part of a diversified marketing approach by the government in recent years to boost Taiwan’s profile as a top choice for holidaymakers worldwide.

The series will be broadcast in the Philippines, Southeast Asia, India, Australia and New Zealand in that order. More than 100 million viewers will watch the vloggers explore Taipei City using its public bike rental system YouBike, stroll along the streets of the historic mountain town of Jiufen in New Taipei City and pedal part of the King of the Mountain Challenge—rated one of the world’s top 50 scenic cycling routes—in Hualien County’s Taroko National Park, eastern Taiwan.

Bureau efforts promoting Taiwan’s tourism industry have paid handsome dividends. According to official statistics, the annual number of foreign visitors to Taiwan surged 88 percent from 2010 to more than 10 million for the first time last year, with 72 percent tourists. Related foreign exchange earnings increased 61 percent to NT$443.8 billion (US$13.74 billion) over the same period.
