2020/08/20

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu presented William Manuel Tapia Aleman, outgoing Nicaragua ambassador, the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon in recognition of his extensive efforts in strengthening relations between Taiwan and the Central America ally Aug. 17 in Taipei City.

Taipia worked tirelessly during his 12 years in office to deepen bilateral friendship and expand exchanges across the areas of culture, politics and trade, Wu said. This contribution enhanced mutual understanding, and is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, he added.

According to the MOFA, Tapia first visited Taiwan in 1963 as a member of the inaugural group of scholarship students from Nicaragua. He returned in an official capacity 45 years later as ambassador.

Taipia said the experience changed his life and prepared him for his future career as a diplomat. He vowed to continue bolstering Taiwan-Nicaragua ties during his next posting to India.

Taiwan and Nicaragua enjoy long-standing ties spanning the fields of agriculture, culture, education, health care and sports. This cooperation has benefited all segments of society, especially disadvantaged groups.
